Kwakiutl Beaver Mask Headdress Carved by George HuntKwakiutl Beaver Mask by George Hunt

Inventory#81307

Description: Rare Kwakiutl beaver mask carved by historic linguist, collector, ethnologist George Hunt. George Hunt worked for 45 years as an informant and translator for the anthropologist Franz Boas, supplying artifacts and stories from 1888 until Hunt's death at Fort Rupert in September of 1933. Although Hunt is seldom credited as an author, the vast majority of Franz Boas' work based on Kwak'wala-language research, such as Kwakiutl Texts (1905 & 1906), was derived directly from Hunt's writing.

This mask was acquired from an East Texas estate which included items from the World Columbian Exposition of 1893 in Chicago. Items collected by Hunt comprised the exhibit on the Kwakiutl at the exposition. Hand carved items were also sold by the Kwakiutl and this mask may be a souvenir from the exposition.

Peruvian Chulucanas Pot with Nazca Lines Design

Native American Chulucanas Pottery Jar with Nazca Lines

Artist Signed - Julio Flores

Inventory # 80447

Description: This Chulucanas pot is covered with a colorful glaze and engraved with representations of Nazca lines. The Nazca Lines are geoglyphs found in the Nazca Desert, a high arid plateau between the towns of Nazca and Palpa on the Pampas de Jumana in Peru.

"Thousands of years ago, the potters of the Vicus culture in the coastal deserts of Peru were known throughout the land as the finest ceramic artists. Using the clay beneath their feet, the natural symbols around them and a strong religious inspiration to guide them, they fashioned elegantly shaped, subtly painted ceramic pots. Hand burnished with volcanic rock, decorated with earth colors of naturally-dyed slips, and based on their ancient culture for motifs as old as time, Chulucanas pottery is made by the descendants of these indigenous artist of northern Peru. Chulucanas pottery can be considered a true inheritance from the Precolombian art of the Vicus, not only because of its quality but also because its artists have captured the techniques that were developed more than 2,000 years ago in the northern coast of Peru."

Peruvian Chulucanas Pottery JarChulucanas Native American Pottery Jar

Artist Signed - Antonio Lavada

Inventory # 80445

Description: "Chulucanas pottery is uniquely created through a multi-step process. First, the piece is formed using several techniques: paddling, rolling, tableting and using a wheel or an extruder. Once shaped and in a leathery state, the piece is painted with a slip made from clay and pigment. Then comes one of the most important steps in the process: the burnishing or polishing which includes rubbing the entire visible surface with river stones of several forms and sizes to obtain a fully satin and homogenous surface. This operation is repeated three times and requires great skill so that the piece will not be damaged or cracked. Once dry, the pot is stacked in the wood-fired kiln and heated to a temperature of approximately 700 to 900 degrees centigrade."

"The next stage is the decoration, or slip casting, in which liquid clay is used to cover the areas that are to be kept intact, while the areas the potter wishes to darken are left uncovered. This method is known as “reverse.” The decorated piece is then loaded into the smoke kiln where burning mango leaves will produce smoke that will darken the piece. A resin is also applied that adheres to the pot giving it the characteristic brilliance of the Chulucanas style. This firing is done two or three times until the desired shade of brown or black is obtained. The pieces are then cleaned to remove the slip and a final finish wax is applied to highlight the impeccable satin characteristic. Product care: A waterproof solution is applied to completed utilitarian pieces such as bowls and flower vases to give them a 95 percent water retention capacity. When completed, each item is signed by the artists who created it."
